Once it has been determined that your teen would benefit from an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), your child becomes eligible for special accommodations at school. Some of these include, but are not limited to:

Being moved to the front of the classroom.

Receiving extra time on tests and quizzes.

Written instructions from the teacher regarding homework assignments.

Extra time with the teachers.

Clarifying the problem is the first step towards getting your teen the support they need. It is important that school personnel understand that your teen’s challenges are not originating from a behavioral problem. (although frustration stemming from unaddressed learning challenges can result in “acting out” behaviors)

While learning disorders do present a challenge to your teen’s academic success, they do not need to derail their educational process. With emotional and educational support, teens with learning disorders can have a positive and successful high school experience.

With the challenges in the economy, adults who have been laid off from their jobs are now competing for jobs that used to be filled by high school and college students. Read on to learn about employment opportunities for LA teens. – Sandra

PRESENTING YOURSELF TO POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS
Job hunting is work, and teenagers will need to dress appropriately and be an effective communicator in their interview to ultimately land the job. Although Los Angeles is a casual town, teens should never appear for a job interview dressed too casually. A first impression is often a lasting one, so it is helpful to dress to impress.

PREPARING FOR YOUR INTERVIEW
It is a good idea for teens to prep for an interview by practicing with a friend or parent. Teens will want to plan ahead by rehearsing answering the types of questions a prospective employer might ask. Teens may also need to fill out many job applications to land a job, so they need be prepared with their social security number and a resume.

WHAT IF I HAVE NO JOB EXPERIENCE?
It’s fine if teens have no previous work experience. Instead, they can create a resume listing their interests and activities, which will give prospective employers a sense of their skills and background. Teens want to get familiar with the various places to which they are applying. This can be done by doing a research on Internet or visiting the place in person.

BE PERSISTENT
Following up is really important! When a potential employer observes a teen stopping in several times to inquire about their application, they are more likely to take the teen seriously. Teens will want to remember to be warm, gracious, and respectful in their inquiries. A “not today,” doesn’t necessarily mean a “no” tomorrow.

BE FLEXIBLE
In the beginning, teens will need to be flexible about when they are willing to work, as they will most likely to be asked to start on a less desirable schedule. If teens are able to work part-time before the summer starts, it may help them land a full-time job that lasts through the summer.

JOB IDEAS FOR TEENS
Teens will want to consider applying to local retail stores, grocery stores, movie theaters, and theme parks near their home. Resourceful teens have also created their own landscaping, delivery, babysitting, tutoring, lifeguard and dog walking businesses. Where there is a will, there is a way! Teens can consider printing flyers or business cards and distributing them among their neighbors as well as asking people they know if they could use help in their businesses or around their home.

Did you know that the ability to cope with negative feelings and move on from bad experiences can be learned? – Sandra

SUBSTANCE ABUSE IS ON THE RISE
Self-injury and substance abuse is on the rise among teens and pre-teens. Drug addiction is often based on the user wanting to get away from painful feelings, such as anxiety or depression.

SELF-AWARENESS EXERCISES CAN HELP
Mindfulness is a term used to describe the practice of observing one’s thoughts and body in the present moment. Mindfulness can literally affect the brain connections involved in attention, memory, and emotional regulation.

ENCOURAGING POSITIVE CHOICES
I help teens learn how to understand and accept their feelings, and then use that information to respond to challenging situations in more helpful and positive ways.

Does being popular equal being a mean girl...

A Note From The Los Angeles Teen Therapist

What is your definition of being popular? Read on to learn more about how popularity means different things to different people. – Sandra

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE POPULAR?
Being popular may mean that a lot of people know who you are, and try to get your attention. It could also mean that you are trustworthy, fair, and someone that others turn to for your wisdom, support and great sense of humor.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE POPULAR?
I imagine that you have an idea of how your life would be different, and somehow better, if you became more popular. It might be helpful to write down the things you think you would gain by becoming a popular girl at your school.

Then, write down a list of things that you might also need to give up in order to gain that popular status.

HOW WOULD BEING POPULAR CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
Would you need to gossip, or be rude to others? Would you be constantly worrying whether someone else is more popular than you?

Does being popular mean that you always have to be concerned with how you look, or what other people are saying about you? How would you know who your true friends are?

WHY ARE PEOPLE MEAN?
Being mean may be an indication that someone is not very happy. People who choose to be hurtful, and rejecting of others, may be struggling with some insecurities that they try to hide by appearing tough, or overly confident.

NOT EVERYONE HANDLES BEING POPULAR IN THE SAME WAY
Being popular can actually be an opportunity to make a positive difference in your world. Like the celebrities who use their influence to help others, you could be a positive role model that your classmates look up to.

And, if you choose to pursue popularity, please don’t forget the people who already love you for who you are.

Need support?
A Note From the LA Teen Therapist & Life Coach

In modern classrooms, where left brain skills are valued, creative teenagers can be given the message that something is wrong with them. -Sandra

IDENTIFYING CREATIVE PERSONALITIES
Not everyone is suited for college. It is important for parents to realize whether their child is academically oriented or have more creative inclinations.

CUTBACKS IN SCHOOL SPENDING
With all the budget cuts in the public school system, many creative outlets are being taken away from those students. Band, theater groups, dance and art classes may not even be offered at some schools any more.

NURTURING CREATIVE EXPRESSION
For those students who are driven to express themselves artistically, parents can help their teens to find activities where they can thrive. After school programs are being offered through some local community centers and are also available in private classes.

TUTORING
For students who are struggling with traditional academic classes, they may benefit from having some support in the way of tutoring. In this manner, should they decide to continue on to higher education, they can learn the skills and information they will need.

You are the creator of your life, and thus, the most important person in your world. It is important to discover as much as you can about who you are. – Sandra

BECOMING YOUR BEST SELF
In any moment you are complete just as you are. The person you will be in 20 years from now resides within you right now. Your job, in this lifetime, is to give yourself the room to express your best self.

GETTING RID OF EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE
To do this, you must clear out the emotional baggage you have started to accumulate and examine all the things you believe are important. By understanding how you create the world you live in, you can take charge and start building a life that fulfills you.

THE VALUE OF KEEPING A JOURNAL
The process of journaling is designed to teach you how to meet life honestly and openly, and work through your feelings, experiencing your emotions completely. Examining your life challenges allows you figure out ways to resolve them.

JOURNALING DAILY

A Note From the LA Teen Therapist & Life Coach

It is essential for parents to provide their teenager with focused, non-judgmental attention. To improve your parent-child relationship, I recommend this 20 minute daily activity. - Sandra

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Set aside 20 minutes a day where there are no interruptions. Turn off cell phones and try to pick a time when you do not have other things that either of you need to be doing.

2. Let your teenager know that this time will be your special time together, and that you have no expectations on how this time will look.

3. Follow your adolescent’s lead. Talk about whatever they want to talk about. Discover what they want from you during this time. Do they want you to admire them? Respond to them but do not take over and direct them.

4. Watch, wait and wonder about what your teen is telling you. Enter their world and reflect on their experience of life.

5. Avoid giving advice or showing displeasure with what they are offering to share with you.

6. Instead, make observations and/or ask questions about what you hear. (”You sound proud of yourself. What are you planning to do next?”)

7. Have fun. Try to give yourself over completely to the enjoyment of a glimpse into your teenager’s life. You will only find it boring if your mind is stuck in the adult world. Try to be entirely present with your teen. Your adolescent will tell you a lot about themselves and their world if you allow yourself to be receptive.

8. Remember this is not a teaching time. Try to avoid praising or criticizing. You want the motivation of making good choices to ultimately come from within the teenager rather than through praise or punishment.

9. Sometimes, these conversations may elicit strong reactions or uncomfortable feelings on the part of the parent. These reactions may be helpful to reflect on in a supportive setting, like with a parent educator, therapist or another parent you feel safe with. It is important to understand what your feelings mean in regards to your relationship with your child.

10. Try to spend quality time every day, particularly during times of stress in the teen or family’s life.

Last, but not least, make sure to also leave 20 minutes a day for yourself to rest, relax, and do something just for you. (Catching up on household tasks does not count) This time allows you to restore yourself.

Learn how to respond effectively & improve your relationship with your teen. 7-Week Private Parenting Class Series

Here is some information that describes the neurological changes that occur in a teenager's brains, to help you get a bigger picture of what's going on in your brain development...

Here is some important information that describes the developmental changes that occur in teenager’s brains. – Sandra

“I am having a lot of mood swings and feel very different than I used to. What’s wrong with me?”

Have you ever felt blue for no obvious reason?

Do you ever do things on impulse that you later regret?

Have you ever overreacted to a situation and later wondered why?

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THE TEENAGE BRAIN
Adolescence is now starting at younger ages than in previous generations. The average age that girls go into adolescence is between 10 and 11, when they reach 17% body fat. Boys go into adolescence between 12 and 13.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Teenagers are going through a transitional time when the brain rewires itself for emotional attachment, reproduction, and ultimately the creation of a stable family structure, thus ensuring future generations.

THE GAP BETWEEN INTELLIGENCE AND BEHAVIOR
There can be a noticeable gap between intelligence and behavior during the teen years. We used to attribute this to the assault of a hormonal hurricane. There is actually a lot more going on in the different structures of the teenage brain that end up having long-term consequences.

THE BRAIN IS BECOMING MORE EFFICIENT
The myelin sheathing, which insulates nerves, increases by 100% in teenagers. Myelin sheathing is responsible for the conduction of nerve impulses to the brain. As the nerves become twice as efficient, this feeds the intensity and speed of a person’s reaction, contributing to the experience of mood swings.

THERE ARE LOWER SERETONIN LEVELS
The teen years are also time of the lowest levels of Serotonin in the human brain during human life. Serotonin is the primary transmitter in the limbic system, having to do with morale and moods. Low serotonin levels create a state in which a teens are more susceptible to feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

THE BRAIN GROWS IN STAGES
The brain does not grow in an orderly fashion. It first over-produces a bunch of connections that go to new parts of the brain. Then, in the later teen years-around age 16 through the mid-20′s-it starts eliminating connections based on how frequently they are used. The connections that remain determine a person’s sense of identity.

THE ADOLESCENT YEARS CONTINUE INTO YOUR 20′S
Did you know that the teenage brain does not complete development until close to age 25? Yes, something called the pre-frontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control and operates much like the CEO of a company, does not complete development until your mid-twenties, leaving teens vulnerable impulsive behavior.

Needing emotional support? Let me demonstrate the support I can offer you and your family. Schedule a FREE parent consultation.

I am interested in starting a support and discussion group for teen girls in our community. Could you please tell me how to get this started?

INFORMATION ON HOW TO START A TEEN GIRL SUPPORT GROUP:

1. You may want to start by calling, emailing or delivering flyers to the local churches, schools and teen activity centers stating where and when this group will be offered.

2. I would recommend that you download a copy of my FREE E-book: “What Would Your Teen Life Coach Say?“ and make copies to distribute to each of the girls on the first meeting.

3. The format could vary, but here is a format that I have used:

GENERAL FORMAT
Everybody is seated circle so that they can see ever group member’s face, including those on either side of them. Each person is given the opportunity to speak. Members are asked to speak loudly enough for everyone in the circle can hear them.

NO INTERRUPTING
Participants are asked to not interrupt the speakers, though this “rule” may be broken if the topic is very stimulating. (In this case, it is the facilitator’s decision to allow or disallow the interruption.)

USE OF “I” STATEMENTS
Respect is a key element to this group, and gossiping about others is not allowed. Members will be encouraged to use “I” statements to take personal ownership for their thoughts and feelings.

PARTICIPATION IS VOLUNTARY
No one is forced to participate in group discussions, however, everyone will be encouraged. Active participation in the group discussions will allow the participants to learn from each other, as well as discover that they are not alone in their feelings,

CREATING A SAFE SPACE
The main ground rule is that everything discussed in group is held in confidence so as to create a safe space for members to feel free to open up. Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be unacceptable. Any casual discussions of drugs or alcohol will also be discouraged.

HERE ARE GENERAL QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP TO REFLECT ON:

As your body transitions from childhood to adulthood, are you reaching out to the more experienced women in your life — mothers, siblings, aunts?

Do you sometimes have difficulty letting go of some friendships even though you realize it is probably time to move on?

Do you try too hard to please others and then end up feeling unhappy or anxious?

When choosing friends do you seek out the most popular people, or do you prefer to find those with whom you can have an enjoyable conversation?

Are you honest and clear about who you are, or do you hide the most precious parts of yourself for fear of being hurt?

If you feel insulted, do you have the maturity to respond without attacking back?

Is expressing your truth easy for you, or do you often pretend to agree with your friends’ opinions?

Instead of complaining and blaming others, do you take responsibility and turn a negative situation around?

Are you willing to settle for any guy just to have a boyfriend, or are you brave enough to keep looking for someone who is right for you?

While dreaming about what you may still want, how often do you express gratitude for what you already have?

How often do you compare yourself to others?

Do you find yourself making unsafe choices? If so, do you know why?

When someone says or does something that troubles you, do you initiate a talk that might clear the air?

Do you believe you have the right to be treated with kindness and respect?

Are you awkward around boys that you find attractive? If so, what are some things you can do to make yourself feel more comfortable?

Do you keep silent and let your boyfriend tell you what to do, or do you feel free to express your own ideas?

Are you likely to give in to peer pressure, or are you confident enough to listen to your own wisdom?

When you get dressed for school, do you always remember to put on a smile?

Is being “authentic” something common in your world or rare?

Do you change to please others or because the change makes sense to you?

Are you open to trying new experiences and meeting new people?

Do you get caught up in the popularity contest?

Are you in any relationships that intimidate you?

Are you aware when you are completely being yourself and when you are pretending to be someone else?

What is it about yourself that makes you feel proud?

What does your favorite song say about who you are?

If you were asked to write a story of your teen years, what key events would you include?

In years to come, when you look back on your life thus far, will you laugh, cry, feel embarrassed or proud?

What hope or thought carries you through challenging times?

Are you already living the life you want, or are you still waiting for your life to begin?

Once the girls have gotten to know each other, you can invite them to bring in topics that they would like to discuss. Initially, it helps to have a facilitator ask the question, and give everyone a chance to answer.

A Note From the LA Teen Therapist & Life Skills Coach

A Note From the LA Teen Therapist & Life Skills Coach

When people hurt your teen’s feelings, or let them down, they can use this as an opportunity to keep their focus on the kind of life they want to experience. Read on to learn how I might discuss this with your teen. – Sandra

HOLDING A POSITIVE FOCUS
If long time friends seem to be growing apart from you, this does not mean that you are unlovable, or that you will never speak to them again. Sometimes people and situations change and we need to say goodbye.

DON’T FOCUS ON FEAR
It is understandable for you to try and protect yourself from pain by being hesitant about starting new relationships. However, making new friends prove themselves over and over is an exhausting task to ask of them.

TRY REACHING OUT INSTEAD

It’s vital that teenagers understand their world, and not merely react to it. Read on for ideas on how to help them do this. – Sandra

DIGESTING LIFE EXPERIENCES
Self-reflection allows teens to determine what about a situation is unpleasant, and then come up with ways of dealing more effectively with similar experiences. They may come to realize that there are certain skills they still need to learn. They might also come to recognize ways to avoid or turn around those situations in the future.

Self-reflection allows teens to figure out more effective ways of being who they want to be in the world.

MAKING TIME FOR SELF-REFLECTION
The world is full of distractions, and many things that appear more exciting to teens than making time out for self-reflection. Yet, self-reflection allows teens to direct their lives instead of feeling ruled by forces outside of their control.

The kind of wisdom and self-control required for teens to become independent young adults doesn’t come all at once. It is gained by learning from their mistakes, and utilizing their experiences to lay a solid foundation for their life.

SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR TEEN
Try to set aside a portion of time each week to sit down with your teen and discuss how they feel about the direction their life is going in. The best way to approach this subjects is by creating heartfelt discussions. Ideally, you want to consider setting aside 20 minutes a day where there are no interruptions. Turn off cell phones and try to pick a time when you do not have other things that either of you need to be doing.

Try and stay on one topic during each session. Give praise when self-awareness is successfully demonstrated and gentle guidance when it is not. Try to make this a positive experience for your child.

Note: If your teen is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it. I invite you take that critical next step, and allow me to demonstrate the support I can offer to you and your family.

Social skills groups are one way to remedy this situation. – Sandra

The National Association of Gifted Children came out with a list linking characteristic strengths of gifted children with possible problems that might develop:

EXTREMELY HIGH STANDARDS
Because of the difference between their conceptual abilities and their actual development, teens are able to envision outcomes that they are, as yet, unable to perform. Therefore, they frequently end up feeling frustrated and discouraged when learning new things.

PERFECTIONISTIC
By projecting “perfectionism” onto everything they do, these unrealistic self-expectations can result in feelings of inadequacy. Able to anticipate the challenges in new experiences, they can become hesitant to try new things for fear of failing.

HYPERSENSITIVE
Gifted teens can also be hypersensitive to noise, light and the emotions of others, sometimes causing overreaction and difficulty in social settings. These teens often find it easier to be in the company of people older than them.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR PARENTS OF GIFTED TEENS:

· Social Skills Support Groups are helpful for meeting other teens with similar experiences.

· Parents can help their children to understand and digest their life experiences.

· Professionals can help normalize your teen and family’s experience.

A Note From The Los Angeles Teen Therapist

Children learn early on that in order to please others, they sometimes have to give up being who they are. I help teenagers re-discover their true self-expression. – Sandra

Since it is their natural inclination to want to feel connected, children may put aside their feelings to “belong.” As children try and mold themselves to fit an image that their parents, teacher or friends want them to be, they may suppress their needs to the point where they are no longer in touch with what they really feel.

Adolescence, with all the changes that accompany it, can be an intense time where teens are overwhelmed by new feelings. If teens believe that they are responsible for making other’s happy, or that others are responsible for making them happy, they become a victim of others’ choices.

While it is no uncommon for parents to have expectations that they wish their teen to fulfill, it is essential that parents also provide their children with the space to truly be seen and heard. Ultimately, the lessons you want and need to teach them are:

Love and appreciate yourself.

Stand strong in what is true for you.

Trust and believe in yourself.

Don’t waste time looking for other’s approval.

Parents typically teach what they know. If you came from a household where your parents were absent or pre-occupied with their own challenges, you may have be left to grow-up on your own. Depending upon the age difference between you and your child, you may also not yet have had the opportunity to master all of the life skills you want to teach.

In closing, it has been said that it “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” In reality, there is great value in reaching out for support during the process of laying a solid foundation for your child’s future. You are not required to do it alone. Through enlisting the help of professional resources, family, and friends, you can provide your child with the experiences necessary for them to become strong, successful and emotionally healthy young adults.

**Note: If your teen is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it. I invite you take that critical next step, and allow me to demonstrate the support I can offer to you and your family.

TEEN THERAPIST’S NEW BOOK REVIEWED:

In her new book, What Would Your Teen Therapist Say?: A Workbook For Discovering Your True Self-Expression (Volume 1), Los Angeles-based teen therapist Sandra Dupont presents weekly tasks and then provides space for her reader to work through the process in writing.

Thought-provoking themes in the workbook include listening closely to your conversations to make sure you’re saying what you really mean; paying attention to how you spend your time to determine the worthiness of those activities; examining your belief system to see if it still fits; or asking if your friends support you and your dreams.

She also asks the reader to identify inspirational or teachable moments in their own lives, challenges them to find success in their failures, and encourages them to share the gift of their own wisdom with others.

Each weekly lesson prompts the reader to answer questions or imagine various scenarios, some of which are designed to focus on the positive or help the reader develop courage and confidence. The exercises are not always introspective. The teen therapist also asks her readers to find ways to give from the heart, and think about how they can make a difference in the world.

For teens in need of guidance during one of the most difficult transitions in life, this book will help them to become independent, self-aware and self-fulfilled young adults.” by Cameron James–Freelance Writer

**Note: If your teen or young adult child is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it. I invite you take that critical next step, and allow me to demonstrate the support I can offer to you and your family.

CAN YOUR TEEN DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING LIFE SKILLS?

Expressing feelings appropriately

Making a sincere apology

Resisting peer-pressure while maintaining dignity with peers

Maintaining proper and appropriate hygiene

Using proper table manners

Planning and preparing a meal

Managing time effectively

Being a smart consumer

Using conflict resolution techniques to avoid arguments

Maintaining proper boundaries with others

Minimizing the chances of becoming a victim of crime

Handling emergency situations

Knowing how to act and what to say during a job interview

Earning, saving and spending money responsibly

Being able to recognize a person of poor character

If not, you may want to consider setting aside a portion of time each week to discuss and teach these skills to your teen. The best way to approach the subject is by creating a heartfelt discussion. You want to make this a positive experience for your teen.

Implementing these concepts can take some time, and will vary substantially depending on the emotional maturity of your child. Please don’t feel like you have to tackle them all at once. Try setting aside 20 minutes at a time each week where there are no interruptions, and have fun with the process.

*Note: If your teen is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it. I invite you take that critical next step, and allow me to demonstrate the support I can offer to you and your family.

A Note From The Los Angeles Teen Therapist

Teens across the country are suffering, and parents often don’t understand why, or how to best help them. Read on to learn about the various options available to support you in supporting your child. – Sandra

IS YOUR TEEN STRUGGLING?
The teen years are some of the hardest — for everyone. By waiting until emotional problems with your teen have escalated, the issue becomes more complicated to solve. It is important to address issues as soon as you become aware of them.

RESEARCHING MENTAL HEALTH
The Internet now allows parents the opportunity to seek support for their teen or family before any serious issues have occurred. Depression, anxiety, learning disorders and even substance abuse are all issues that can be dealt with.

PARENTING RESOURCES
I use Facebook, Twitter and my Teen Advice Blog as community resources to help promote mental and emotional health in teens. My desire and intention is to be a resource to parents whose teenagers are experiencing emotional pain.

CREATING A SANCTUARY FOR TEENS
My experience as a Teen Therapist has paved the way for my developing creative and positive ways of supporting teenagers. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space for your teen to explore their obstacles, ask their questions and express their feelings.

SOCIAL & LIFE SKILL COACHING
Some parents are hesitant to take their teen to a therapist to address these issues, afraid that they will be labeled as “problem kids.” Seeking my services as a Teen Life Skills Coach offers yet another opportunity to remedy these problems.

*Note: If your teen is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it. I invite you take that critical next step, and allow me to demonstrate the support I can offer to you and your family.

Not every student learns at the same pace or in the same style.
UDERSTANDING YOUR TEEN’S EXPERIENCE
You want to check in periodically with your teen about their school experience. Ask what they think of their teachers and how enthused they are feeling about each of the subjects they are studying. It is also important to keep yourself informed about their assignments and what their are learning.

OBSTACLES TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS
If your teen is expressing feelings of helplessness or hopelessness about a particular class or classes this could mean a couple of things:

They need some assistance beyond the time spent in class to understand the new information, and thus a tutor may prove helpful.

They may have a learning style that needs to be better understood, like ADD, dyslexia, or a sensory processing disorder. There are tests as well as treatment designed to help overcome these challenges.

They may be struggling emotionally with depression, bullying, low self-esteem or even substance abuse. These are all situations that would benefit from a consultation and/or treatment with a trained mental health professional.

MORE THAN JUST GRADES
The educational process offers students the opportunity to learn social skills, personal responsibility, respect for authority, as well as how to manage their time, areas of interest to them, and how to gather and absorb information. It is essential that parents support their teen in having a positive and successful school experience.
